About Montrose Playhouse

The Playhouse is a prominent, distinctive facility in Angus for social and cultural events which enables audiences and participants to see, experience, learn and create in a safe and welcoming environment.

With three beautiful, adaptable cinema screens, two flexible activity rooms, a modern, comfortable café bar and a packed programme of events, workshops, classes and activities aimed at all ages and abilities, The Playhouse is one of the most exciting new venues for the residents and visitors to Angus and South Aberdeenshire.

The brainchild of a local designer David Paton and facilitated by a group of local volunteers, The Playhouse is a not-for-profit facility run by individuals employed by The Montrose Playhouse Project SCIO Trustees who will retain overall governance. This will ensure that The Playhouse remains a facility which is truly for the community, by the community.

Our Screens

All of our screens have digital projectors with the capability to play DCP or run laptop presentations. We also have radio mics available upon request, and an induction loop will also be available in each screen and throughout the facility.

Screen 1

Our main screens offer a fantastic cinema experience – but that‘s not all. Screen 1 has a small performance space at the front of the auditorium which allows us to open up the space to events throughout the year such as comedians, bands and small live performances. This screen seats 128 people and have a range of seating, including sofas, love seats, cinema seats, wheelchair spaces and front rows with footstools.

Screen 3

Screen 3 is a smaller, more opulent space with around 100 larger cinema seats and sofas as well as wheelchair spaces, which will benefit from side tables to create an auditorium for events, premieres and private hires.

Our Social Programmes

The whole ethos of The Playhouse is about social inclusion. We aim to provide the entire community with access to cultural, educational and inclusive experiences.

Silver Screen

Social isolation is one of the biggest issues that faces our communit. Every Wednesday afternoon we will host our Silver Screen, where our over 60's can enjoy some company in The Reel Café Bar, as well as taking in a film with a cuppy and cake included in the ticket cost.

We hope this will foster new friendships and interests and allow people who feel a bit isolated, to reintegrate into the community. We can assist and arrange special, accompanied collections for people with mobility issues.

Baby & Me

Selected screenings will be parent/guardian and baby friendly for under 2s so there’s no need to worry about disturbing other guests while the film is playing.

These films will be shown with softer volume and ever-so-slightly brighter lights to create a sleepy environment for babies so their bigs can enjoy some much needed adult time.

Dementia Friendly

Our Back to the Future screen memories programme aims to make cinema a key part of a dementia and Alzheimer‘s friendly community by providing accessible, fun and inclusive screenings. This will enable people living with these conditions, their families and carers to attend the cinema in a safe and welcoming environment giving them the confidence to continue to enjoy the cinematic experience.

We will recruit volunteers who are trained in dementia and Alzheimer‘s awareness to facilitate this as well as partnering with Montrose Community Trust which already runs Football Memories and Golf Memories programmes in the town.

Relaxed Screenings

Every Sunday and Monday, The Playhouse will provide relaxed screenings for our customers on the autism spectrum or who have sensory sensitivities or mild dementia. We will show current and classic films for all ages, supported by our staff who will be trained in autism awareness.

Enjoy the freedom to roam around and make yourself at home in the chilled out environment with low lighting and sound and no trailers or advertisements. Relax in the comfort of knowing you are in a friendly and understanding space.

Kids Club

On Saturday & Sunday mornings we will screen new or classic children’s films for families in the safe surroundings of The Playhouse where they won’t be disturbed by pesky adults. All Tickets are £3

A Series of Exciting Events

Live events, for example, National Theatre productions, ballets, West End musicals, museum and gallery tours or musical performances will be streamed on a regular basis, giving the community easy and affordable access to national and international cultural events and educational experiences.

Our Spaces

Aside from providing a world-class cinema, Montrose Playhouse also features a variety of additional spaces for our community to use. Activity rooms, a cafe bar and our retail space can all adapt for different uses to make Montrose Playhouse a thriving community hub.
