Social Programmes

For the community

The whole ethos of The Playhouse is about social inclusion: We aim to provide the entire community with access to cultural, educational and inclusive experiences. Look out for the coloured symbols below on our sample schedule.

Stand by me

Social isolation is one of the biggest issues that faces our community today and it is not only restricted to the older generation.

People who feel that the community in which they live is beyond their reach and may be a bit wary or reluctant to come to The Playhouse alone will be able to arrange to meet with or even to be collected by one of our youth or adult volunteers along with other people who are in a similar position, enjoying some company in The Reel Café Bar, as well as taking in a film or other event.

We hope this will foster new friendships and interests and allow people who feel a bit isolated, to reintegrate into the community. We will partner with local taxi firms to arrange special, accompanied collections for people with mobility issues.

Little Rascals

On Saturday mornings we will screen new or classic children’s films for families in the safe surroundings of The Playhouse where they won’t be disturbed by pesky adults. We will include a drink and a snack with the children‘s ticket price. Family tickets will also available.

Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner

Selected screenings will be parent/guardian and baby friendly for under 2s so there’s no need to worry about disturbing other guests while the film is playing. These films will be shown with softer volume and ever-so-slightly brighter lights to create a sleepy environment for babies so their bigs can enjoy some much needed adult time.

Playhouse and chill

On selected days throughout the month, The Playhouse will provide relaxed screenings for our customers on the autism spectrum or who have sensory sensitivities or mild dementia. We will show current and classic films for all ages, supported by our staff who will be trained in autism awareness.

Enjoy the freedom to roam around and make yourself at home in the chilled out environment with low lighting and sound and no trailers or advertisements. Relax in the comfort of knowing you are in a friendly and understanding space.

Back to the future

Our Back to the Future screen memories programme aims to make cinema a key part of a dementia and Alzheimer‘s friendly community by providing accessible, fun and inclusive screenings.

This will enable people living with these conditions, their families and carers to attend the cinema in a safe and welcoming environment giving them the confidence to continue to enjoy the cinematic experience.

We will recruit volunteers who are trained in dementia and Alzheimer‘s awareness to facilitate this as well as partnering with Montrose Community Trust which already runs Football Memories and Golf Memories programmes in the town.

A Series of Exciting Events

Live events, for example, National Theatre productions, ballets, West End musicals, museum and gallery tours or musical performances will be streamed on a regular basis, giving the community easy and affordable access to national and international cultural events and educational experiences.

Sometimes the audio description is available on a separate backing track and can be used during all screenings via a headset which is available from our Box Office upon request. 2D versions will be screened of all 3D films for those who cannot view in 3D due to sight or other issues.
